BODY POSITIVITY AND SELF LOVE: FROM A MAMS PERSPECTIVE

As a Mam who’s struggled with weight and body image issues since childhood, witnessing my children face similar struggles has underscored the impact of social pressures and media views. My own journey toward self-acceptance has been a series of hurdles, and now, seeing my daughter navigate similar insecurities, I feel a pressing need to nurture in her and my son a deep sense of body positivity and self-love.

Early on, a teacher’s thoughtless comment about my weight left a lasting imprint on my self-esteem. Fast forward to today’s digital age, where social media inundates us with unrealistic standards of beauty. It broke my heart when my daughter tearfully admitted feeling inadequate because of her appearance, echoing the struggles I faced at her age.

Faced with this cultural pressure, I grapple with how best to shield my children from harmful beauty standards. While the impulse to protect them from online influences is strong, I realise censorship alone won’t shield them from social expectations.

Instead, I aim to foster a supportive environment rooted in self-acceptance and empowerment. I remind my children – and myself – that our value goes beyond physical appearance. We celebrate our bodies for their strength, resilience, and the happiness they bring us.

Promoting healthy habits and positive self-talk becomes a priority. We embark on shared adventures – swimming, walking our dogs, and exploring nature –enjoying spending time as a family but getting out and about. I emphasise the importance of looking after our bodies with wholesome foods, focusing on balance and moderation.

But perhaps most importantly, I lead by example. I’m mindful of the impact my words and actions have on my children’s self-perception. I strive to create an environment where open dialogue thrives, where my children feel safe expressing their fears without judgment.

As parents we navigate the delicate balance of shielding our children while empowering them to navigate the world with resilience. It’s a daunting task, filled with uncertainty. Yet, by embracing our own journey toward self-love, we equip our children with the tools they need to thrive in a world that often undermines their worth.

My greatest hope is that my children will view themselves through a lens of kindness and compassion, embracing their uniqueness. In a world inundated with unrealistic standards, may they find solace in the love and acceptance that surrounds them – both within our family and within themselves.

NAVIGATING THE BALANCE: FINDING PEACE IN TIME OFF

As I sit down to write this blog, I find myself reflecting on the past week – the start of my long-awaited holidays with my children. It’s supposed to be a time of relaxation and joy, an opportunity to switch off from the daily grind and reconnect with my loved ones. Yet, despite my efforts to maintain a positive view, there’s a heaviness weighing on me, an invisible burden that seems to grow heavier with each passing day.

You see, like many others, I wear multiple hats in life – a mam, a wife, a daughter, a friend, a boss, a colleague. The pressure of juggling these roles often leaves me feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Even when I should be enjoying a moment of respite, I find myself plagued by guilt – guilt for not being productive, for not fulfilling every obligation, for simply taking a moment to breathe.

Looking back, I realise that I’ve always struggled with the need to be constantly busy, to always have something to do. It’s as if I’m afraid of the silence, afraid of what might happen if I allow myself to just be. And now, in this time of life, I’m beginning to see the toll it’s taking on me – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The weeks leading up to my time off are always fraught with illness – a cold here, a sniffle there. It’s almost as if my body knows that rest is on the horizon and rebels against the idea. And when the moment finally arrives, when I have the chance to unwind and recharge, my brain goes into overdrive, bombarding me with thoughts of all the things I should be doing instead.

But amidst this struggle, I’m reminded of the importance of finding balance, of learning to prioritise self-care and well-being. My career will always be important to me, and I will always strive to excel in whatever I do. But I’ve come to realise that true success isn’t measured solely by productivity or accomplishments – it’s also about finding peace and fulfillment in the moments in between.

I’m grateful to have a supportive family who understands and accepts me, flaws and all. They remind me that it’s okay to take a step back, to put myself first sometimes, to simply enjoy the present moment without worrying about what comes next.

So as I continue on this journey of self-discovery and growth, I vow to be kinder to myself, to embrace the stillness, and to savor the precious moments spent with those I love. And though the road ahead may be filled with challenges and setbacks, I take comfort in knowing that I don’t walk it alone. Together, we’ll navigate the balancing act of life, one step at a time.

IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORT IN YOUR WEIGHT-LOSS JOURNEY

SUPPORT IS KEY

Losing weight can be a daunting journey, filled with challenges and obstacles at every turn.

For many, the support and guidance provided by programs like Weight Watchers can make all the difference between success and failure. As someone who has personally experienced the transformative power of Weight Watchers classes, I can attest to the vital role that support plays, not only during the weight loss process but also in maintaining a healthy lifestyle afterward.

Despite the skepticism that surrounds programs like Weight Watchers, I firmly believe that finding the right support system is paramount. While some may argue that slimming clubs are not for everyone, the reality is that many individuals, including myself and my own Mam have found immense success and fulfillment through these programs.

My journey with Weight Watchers began in January 2023, and since then, attending weekly classes has become a cornerstone of my weight loss strategy. But it’s not just about shedding pounds; it’s about the ongoing support and camaraderie that come with being part of a community of like-minded individuals.

My Mam (who won’t mind me saying this), has struggled with her weight for years, also found solace in Weight Watchers. However, without the support of a class or accountability, she experienced setbacks and regained much of the weight she had lost during COVID. This serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of having a support system in place, particularly during the post-weight loss phase.

COVID has undoubtedly changed the landscape of many industries, including the weight loss sector. With the shift towards online platforms and virtual meetings, Weight Watchers has adapted its approach to provide continued support in these challenging times. However, as convenient as virtual groups may be, they may not suit everyone’s needs.

I’ve witnessed firsthand the impact of dwindling class numbers and the subsequent closure of some sessions. As a gold member, I understand the frustration of not having my attendance counted towards the class numbers, which can have repercussions for our dedicated coach, Karen.

Life can be hectic, and finding the time to prioritise weight loss goals isn’t always easy. But beyond the numbers on the scale, attending Weight Watchers classes offers a sense of community and understanding that is unparalleled. It’s about connecting with others who share similar struggles and celebrating each other’s successes, no matter how big or small.

For those who have embarked on their own Weight Watchers journey, I urge you not to underestimate the power of face-to-face interaction and the support of a dedicated coach like Karen. While supportive friends and family are invaluable, there’s something unique about the bond formed within a Weight Watchers class – a shared understanding of the challenges and triumphs that come with weight loss.

Me and my coach Karen 💗

As someone who continues to attend classes despite reaching my weight loss goal, I can attest to the fear of slipping back into old habits. But with the unwavering support of my fellow members and our incredible coach, I feel confident in my ability to maintain my progress and live a healthier, happier life.

In a world that’s increasingly digital, let’s not forget the power of human connection and the role that support plays in achieving our goals. So, let’s rally behind Karen and each other, because together, we can achieve anything.

EMBRACING BALANCE: WHY ITS IMPORTANT TO GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK ON YOUR JOURNEY

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to get caught up in the pressure we put on ourselves, especially when it comes to our health and wellness journey. We often find ourselves constantly counting points, restricting our favorite foods, or sacrificing activities we love in pursuit of our weight goals. But what if I told you that putting too much pressure on yourself could actually hinder your progress in the long run?

Throughout my own journey, I’ve learned the importance of balance and giving myself a break. While it’s crucial to stay disciplined and make healthy choices, it’s equally important to enjoy life and indulge in the things that bring us joy, including food and activities we love.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is not to deprive myself unnecessarily. Instead of refusing to go out because I’m worried about what I’ll eat, I’ve learned to plan ahead and make healthier choices leading up to social events. For example, if I know I have a special occasion coming up, like a Mother’s Day lunch, I’ll focus on incorporating more activity into my week and opt for balanced, low-pointed meals to offset any indulgences.

This year, instead of going out for Mother’s Day, I’ve decided to host a lunch at home for my family. While I still plan to indulge in our favorite dishes, I’ll be mindful of portion sizes and make healthier tweaks to our dessert. This decision not only allows me to enjoy quality time with loved ones but also gives me control over the menu and ensures I’m making choices that align with my goals.

In the past, I would have felt guilty for indulging or overeating during such occasions, but now I understand that it’s all part of the journey. By allowing myself to enjoy food and celebrate without guilt, I’m able to maintain a healthier mindset and avoid the cycle of restriction and overindulgence.

It’s important to remember that perfection is not the goal. Life is full of ups and downs, and it’s okay to have moments of indulgence or setbacks along the way. What matters most is finding balance, listening to your body, and prioritizing your overall well-being.

So, the next time you find yourself putting too much pressure on yourself or feeling guilty for enjoying life’s pleasures, remember that it’s okay to give yourself a break. Embrace balance, savor the moment, and focus on being happy and fulfilled. After all, life is too short to spend it counting points and depriving yourself of joy.

1 YEAR ON…. REFLECTING ON MY JOURNEY

It’s been quite some time since I last connected with you through this platform, and for that, I must extend my apologies. The past few months have been a whirlwind of activity, leaving me with little time to invest in sharing stories, recipes, and updates as I once promised. However, as we move forward into the coming weeks, I am eager to rekindle our connection and share with you the experiences and creations.

Life has a funny way of keeping us on our toes, doesn’t it? Between work commitments, personal endeavors, and unexpected twists and turns, it’s easy to let certain priorities slip through the cracks. Unfortunately, my blog fell victim to this pattern, and for that, I am truly sorry. Your continued support and patience mean the world to me, and I am committed to making it up to you.

Now, onto the good stuff. Despite the chaos of the past few months, I’ve been busy in the kitchen, experimenting with new recipes and flavours that I can’t wait to share with you all. From hearty comfort foods to light and refreshing dishes, there’s something for everyone in the pipeline. So, stay tuned for tantalising tastes that I hope inspire your own kitchen creations.

But that’s not all. In addition to my culinary creations, I’ve also been on a personal journey towards health and wellness. As part of this journey, I recently created a video to share with the Weight Watchers community and beyond. In this video, I open up about my experiences, challenges, and triumphs, offering insight and encouragement to those who may be on a similar path. It’s a honest reflection of my journey thus far, and I hope it resonates with and inspires others along the way.

So, what’s next? Well, you can expect to see more frequent updates from me in the weeks to come. From blog posts to videos and everything in between, I am committed to reconnecting with you all and sharing the stories and creations that have been brewing behind the scenes. Your feedback and engagement are invaluable to me, so please don’t hesitate to reach out and let me know what you’d like to see more of.

Once again, thank you for your unwavering support and understanding. It means more than words can express, and I am truly grateful for each and every one of you. Here’s to new beginnings, delicious discoveries, and the journey ahead.

With gratitude,

Kirsty xx

THE KEY TO BEING PREPARED: PLANNING, VARIETY, AND HEALTHY CHOICES

In the fast-paced world we live in, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet while juggling work, family, and household chores can be a daunting task. However, one individual’s belief in the importance of staying prepared and enjoying a diverse range of foods has led to their success in achieving a healthy lifestyle. Let’s delve into the key elements that have helped them maintain their commitment to nutritious eating.

1. Embracing Variety:
One of the cornerstones of a successful approach to nutrition is embracing variety in your diet. The belief that monotony in food choices can lead to cravings for unhealthy alternatives is well-founded. By experimenting with new recipes and adapting favorite meals to healthier versions, you not only keep your taste buds engaged but also provide your body with a wide array of nutrients. Variety not only makes eating enjoyable but also contributes to a well-rounded diet.

2. Stocking Up on Healthy Snacks:
It’s no secret that, at times, we find ourselves aimlessly searching the fridge for snacks. To counter this tendency, keeping a stash of healthy snacks readily available is crucial. These snacks can include cut-up fruits and vegetables, hummus, yogurt, or whole-grain crackers. The convenience of healthy snacks ensures that you make nutritious choices even during moments of temptation.

3. The Power of Planning:
Planning is the backbone of maintaining a healthy diet amidst a busy life. Writing a shopping list and creating a meal plan for the week ahead not only saves time but also prevents impulse purchases of unhealthy items. With a well-thought-out plan, you can ensure your kitchen is stocked with wholesome ingredients and minimize food waste.

4. The Joy of Cooking:
Cooking isn’t just a chore; it’s a passion for many. Taking time to cook and prepare meals, even if they are simple, can be incredibly rewarding. Chopping up fresh vegetables for dipping or experimenting with new sandwich fillers, quiches, and salsas can make healthy eating an exciting journey. Cooking allows you to control the ingredients and flavors, ensuring that every meal aligns with your dietary goals.

In conclusion, the key to being prepared for a healthy lifestyle involves embracing variety, having a stockpile of nutritious snacks, meticulous planning, and a love for cooking. While the demands of a busy life can be overwhelming, incorporating these strategies into your daily routine can help you stay on track with your health and dietary goals. Remember, it’s not just about eating to live but also living to eat – enjoying a diverse and nutritious diet that nourishes both body and soul.

FLORIDA GETAWAY:MAKING MEMORIES & EMBRACING BALANCE

Last month, I embarked on a journey to the Sunshine State, and little did I know that this trip to Florida would turn out to be an unforgettable adventure filled with cherished moments and indulgent treats. As I look back, I can’t help but smile at how this holiday allowed me to break free from my usual worries about appearances and savor every single second.

Before jetting off, I had reached my long-standing goal weight, a significant achievement that had me feeling confident and ready for my getaway. However, I also made a conscious decision not to let dietary restrictions overshadow my enjoyment. Florida beckoned with its enticing offerings, and I was determined to relish them.

One of the joys of traveling is experiencing the local cuisine, and Florida had some mouthwatering delights in store. Turkey legs, cheesy chips, giant cookies, caramel popcorn, pretzels with mustard, pizza, ice cream, and cheesecake all found their way onto my plate. To balance things out, I often opted to share or ordered child-sized portions, which allowed me to savor the flavors without overindulging.

The Florida heat kept me on my toes, literally. With an average daily step count of 18,000, I was constantly on the move. Staying hydrated was essential, and I guzzled more water than I thought possible. Of course, there were those occasional frozen rum and Coke drinks shared with my auntie – a delightful discovery that became a holiday tradition and will certainly continue to be when we return.

Returning home, I made a conscious choice not to immediately step on the dreaded scales. Instead, I focused on transitioning back to my regular healthy eating and exercise routine. I knew that obsessing over the numbers could go either way, and I didn’t want it to taint the incredible memories I had made.

After a week of dedicated effort, I finally mustered the courage to step on the scale. To my surprise, I discovered that I was back to my pre-holiday weight. While I knew I had indulged during my trip, I also realized that getting back on track immediately upon my return was the best decision I could have made.

Me and Mam back to walking as soon as we got back from holiday 💪💪

My Florida adventure was about more than just the sights and sounds; it was a lesson in balance and enjoyment. It taught me that life’s most treasured moments are often found when you let go of worries and embrace the present. So here’s to Florida, to unforgettable memories, and to savoring every moment, one delicious bite at a time.

Until next time we will be back…

A TYPICAL DAY IN THE LIFE: FOLLOWING THE PLAN WHILE WORKING FROM HOME

In a world that constantly demands our attention, adhering to a structured routine can be quite challenging. For me, a day starts with the chime of a 7 am alarm. A swift wake-up is followed by an routine that sets the tone for the day ahead.

The first task: slipping into gym wear and stepping out into the morning air for an energizing walk. The local park becomes a haven for two brisk laps, offering a serene start to the day. Of course my morning walk wouldn’t be complete without my Mam at my side and going out each morning is always a good opportunity for us to have a chin wag and catch up.

Back home by 8:15, a quick shower before a well-balanced breakfast. On a typical day I either opt for a mug cake or a combination of yogurt, fruit, and granola. This is my go to and keeps me fuller for longer and I always chose to have breakfast after my walk.

At 8:30, the transition from personal time to work mode occurs. The focus remains on hydration, as water intake is diligently monitored throughout the day – this is something I need to work on moving forward and don’t intake as much water as I should. The workday commences, marked by diligent dedication and punctuated with short breaks to stand up and move around which my Apple Watch helps remind me of too.

Between the hours of 1 pm and 2 pm I always ensure that I block time in my work diary to have my lunch. The meal, strategically planned during weekly grocery shopping trip, contributes to the day’s point-based balance. A lighter lunch is normally what I opt for, as the main meal in evening is higher in calories and points.

With the hours weaving together, the workday finishes between 5 pm and 7 pm depending on what type of day I am having. That’s when I turn to my love for cooking. The kitchen transforms into a sanctuary, and with the support of the hubby, together we create dishes that resonate with health-conscious choices, the Weight Watchers points gently guiding our selections. On occasion I involve the kids which is a great for them to learn not only how to cook but to understand the importance of a balanced diet.

Post-dinner hours consist of family family time and cuddles. The responsibilities of parenting are fulfilled, settling the kids down for a night of rest. And then, as the world quiets down, there’s for a well earned cup of tea or horlicks if points/calories allow then to bed.

In this atypical day, a symphony of routines harmonizes with the pursuit of wellness. The Weight Watchers plan threads through every aspect, encouraging mindful choices and fostering a sense of balance. From dawn till dusk, I try my best to navigate life’s demands with grace, finding solace in deliberate rituals and the warmth of family.

FROM DENIM DREAMS TO FLORIDA ADVENTURES

Embarking on a weight loss journey was always driven by a desire to be healthier and happier however my dream was for one day for me to fit into a pair of denim shorts on a holiday to Florida in the summer of 2023.

Me and my sister were very lucky to go Florida 3 times, I was between the age of 8-13 and this was all down to my Mam and Dad working hard to get us there. I was always the chubby kid at school and struggled from a young age and even though I have amazing memories I hate looking back at photos because I just remember feeling so uncomfortable in my own skin and this is a feeling I have a only recently shook off.

Little did I know that this journey would lead me not only to achieving that dream but also to discovering a new level of self-confidence and an array of exciting adventures.

As I have mentioned before my decision to start my weight loss journey was motivated by a simple yet powerful goal be happy and healthy but the dream was to comfortably wear a pair of denim shorts during my upcoming trip to Florida. Beyond just fitting into the shorts, I wanted to feel good about myself, both physically and mentally. This goal became my driving force, pushing me to make healthier choices and adopt a more active lifestyle.

Turning to Weight Watchers, I found a supportive and sustainable approach to managing my weight and overall well-being. The program’s emphasis on balanced eating and mindfulness resonated with my desire for a healthier lifestyle rather than a quick fix. Tracking my meals, learning about portion control, and incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins into my diet gradually became second nature.

My weight loss just journey from joining weight watchers back in January 2023

Of course, the journey was not without its challenges. There were moments of doubt and temptation, but the goal of those denim shorts hanging in my wardrobe served as a constant reminder of my commitment. Whenever I felt discouraged, I reminded myself of the bigger picture: my health, happiness, and the adventures awaiting me in Florida.

As the weeks passed, I began to see and feel the positive changes. The denim shorts that were once a distant goal became a reality. Putting them on for the first time was a victory that boosted my confidence and reaffirmed the effectiveness of my efforts. But the benefits didn’t stop there – increased energy, improved sleep, and a newfound enthusiasm for physical activities further enriched my life.

The day finally arrived when I managed to get into my ‘daisy dukes’ and I have packed clothing for my holiday with clothes I could never imagined wearing including several pairs of denim shorts.

A special moment for me was trying on some cycling shorts and sports top and it’s the first time ever that in my life felt that good about myself and I have never smiled so wide and 100% will be wearing the outfit while I am away.

So here is to me stepping off that the plane wearing those once-aspirational denim shorts. The joy of achieving my initial goal was overwhelming, but what truly amazed me was how this journey had transformed me on a deeper level. I was no longer just focused on fitting into a pair of shorts; I was focused on embracing the experiences that lay ahead.

I am looking forward to going on a family holiday instead of worrying about my appearance I will be able to make memories with my beautiful family and enjoy every moment of our holiday. My journey has truly given me a newfound appreciation for both my body and the adventures it could undertake.

What began as a quest to fit into a pair of denim shorts evolved into a profound journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and happiness. My commitment to a healthier lifestyle through Weight Watchers not only allowed me to achieve my initial goal but also opened the door to a world of possibilities. With a healthier body and a more positive mindset, I am now equipped to embrace life’s adventures with enthusiasm, whether it’s strolling through the streets of Florida or taking on new challenges that come my way.

EMPOWERING EATING OUT: MAKING SENSIBLE CHOICES AND EMBRACING CONFIDENCE

Eating out can be a delightful experience, but it often poses challenges to those striving to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The temptation of indulgent dishes and hidden unhealthy ingredients can derail even the most dedicated health-conscious individuals. However, with a little planning, confidence, and smart decision-making, dining out can become an enjoyable and nourishing part of your wellness journey.

  1. The Power of Planning:
Before heading out to dine, take a moment to research the restaurant’s menu online. Familiarising yourself with the available options can help you make informed decisions that align with your dietary goals. Look for dishes that are balanced, rich in nutrients, and prepared in a healthier manner. If possible, check for the ingredients used to avoid any foods with excessive added sugars and unhealthy fats. The good thing about WW is that there is a restaurant section in the app that will always support you with this and I swear by it.
  2. Embrace Confidence and Inquire:
Having confidence in your dietary choices is key when eating out. Don’t hesitate to ask your server questions about the preparation methods and ingredients used in a particular dish. Many restaurants now accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions, so asking for modifications or healthier substitutions is becoming increasingly common. Over time colleagues, friends and family have got used to me asking these questions and had many eye rolling moments in the beginning at one point one of my colleagues thought I was going to pull a bottle of fry light out my bag.
  3. Making Sensible Choices:
When scanning the menu, opt for dishes that feature fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Look for words like “grilled,” “baked,” or “steamed” instead of “fried” or “breaded.” Salads with a variety of colorful vegetables and protein sources can be a great option, but be cautious of high-calorie dressings and excessive toppings.
  4. Watch Portion Sizes:
Restaurant portions are often larger than necessary. To avoid overeating, consider sharing a meal with a dining partner or ask for a half portion. Alternatively, you can ask the server to pack up half of your meal before it even reaches the table, allowing you to savor the flavors without overindulging.
  5. Mindful Eating:
Practice mindful eating by eating slowly and savoring each bite. This allows your brain to register when you’re full, preventing overeating. Engage in conversation and enjoy the dining experience, rather than focusing solely on the food.
  6. Be Mindful of Drinks:
Sugary beverages like sodas and fruit juices can contribute to excess calories and sugar intake. Opt for water, unsweetened tea, or other low-calorie options. If you prefer alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation and choose lighter options like wine or light beer.
Took my Mam out for birthday breakfast and planned ahead, took my time and enjoyed every bite.

Eating out can be a pleasurable experience without compromising your health goals. By planning ahead, making sensible choices, and having the confidence to inquire about healthier options, you can enjoy restaurant meals while staying on track with your wellness journey. Remember, moderation is key, and being mindful of your choices will empower you to strike the perfect balance between indulgence and nourishment.
